BIG IDEA! KIDS CURRICULUM Christmas Play and Talent Show: Jesus, the Real Star of Christmas.

This Christmas play & Talent Show is sure to be a fun time for the kids, win over every parent’s heart & share the Christmas message all in one. Plus, it’s super easy to put together & won’t take rehearsals from October to December. It’s a Christmas miracle!

A Christmas Play & Talent Show all rolled into one! A great Christmas skit for churches & Christian schools during the Christmas holiday season.

So what’s the play about?

The play picks up the day before the big Christmas Talent Show. So we’re not technically watching the actual Talent Show itself, we the audience, are watching the “dress rehearsal” for it the day before.

We are introduced to Ms. Wilson, an elderly Sunday School teacher, and her two assistants as they finish their preparations & run through the Talent Show with all of the kids. It becomes evident that the 2 young helpers seem to think that they are the stars of the show, which leads Ms. Wilson to remind everyone who the real star of Christmas is: Jesus.

The beauty of this play is that it’s meant to look un-polished & imperfect. It is, after all, the “dress rehearsal” that we’re watching. So the pressure is off, this Christmas play doesn’t have to be an over-rehearsed, flawless masterpiece! It’s charm is in the fact that it isn’t.

Got questions? Find answers here:

  • It’s a Christmas play that revolves around a Christmas Talent Show. We’re essentially killing 2 birds with 1 stone in that we’ve got a good Christmas skit AND we have some singing & dancing by the kids.

It’s win-win. Lots of kids can be involved. Parents get to see their kids on stage performing, or for those who want to be involved but not directly in the spotlight, they can be dressed up in cute animal costumes & join the life-size Nativity scene.

This is also a perfect tool to reach out to family, friends & neighbors! Invite them to come out & see your kids perform!

    • Some wisemen.

    • Some shepherds.

    • Lots of animals - indeed, as many as you want to include around the manger!

  • The script is 6 pages, broken up into 4 parts. Just the script itself should have a run time of about 10-15 minutes. The real length of the show comes from the actual Talent Show acts - which you’re in charge of curating.

Part 1: Getting ready. This introduces the characters & premise of the play.

Part 2: Little kids talent show. (Classic musical/dance numbers).

Part 3: Older kids talent show. (Tik Tok videos)

Part 4: Wrapping it up. Closing out the play with the lesson learned that Jesus is the star of Christmas.

  • Firstly, remember that the whole idea of the Christmas play is that we’re watching the “dress rehearsal”. So it’s built into the script that things won’t look or feel perfect. (This is on purpose!)

You could approach rehearsals this way:

The script & actors - running their lines & blocking, etc. Maybe 2-3 rehearsals together.

The Talent Show acts can be rehearsed individually because they are stand-alone numbers. *You can also have someone be in charge of all of the little kid musical/dance numbers, and just put them together at the end with one big rehearsal.
