Kids Ministry Idea: Games aren't just for the kids.

Adults playing an intensely competitive game. Indoor Sunday School, Brooklyn, NY. Circa 2016.

Games aren’t just for the kids. Let the adults play, too! Everyone will have a good time (even if your team doesn’t win). For some reason kids absolutely LOVE it when the adults jump in on the games. Some of the most intense and wildly exciting game times we had in Indoor Sunday School were when the adults were racing around like maniacs, popping balloons, getting slimed or getting a water balloon smashed over their head. Don’t believe me? Give it a try and you’ll see that I tell no lies. Games aren’t just for the kids!

3 SUPER SUGGESTIONS:

  • Hype, hype, hype it up to start. Hype up the boys side. Hype up the girls side. Engage in (friendly) banter and smack-talk. “Boys are we gonna beat the girls?!” Or, “Girls are we gonna send the boys home crying?!” Don’t be satisfied with the first response either. “I can’t hear youuuuu!” If you’re popping blood vessels in your neck you know you’re doing it right. Once everyone is pumped up then you know you’re ready to start the game. *Now, it should go without saying but I’m going to say it anyways, you should have a ZERO TOLERANCE policy for actual smack-talk. Like the kind of stuff that is just mean-spirited and down right rude. Keep the atmosphere positive and fun. You don’t want to actually send anyone home crying.

  • Cheer stupid-loud throughout the entire game. You might lose your voice. A good game time is worth it. Come prepared with some throat lozenges, you’ll be alright.

  • Always celebrate a win wildly. The very moment there is a clear winner to the game a volcanic-style eruption of celebration should immediately take place. There should be no delay. Dancing, jumping and hugging your closest neighbor is perfectly acceptable behavior during this time.
